Lifeline Mitts
Knitworthy 9 Our newest collection of accessory patterns, perfect to gift. Knitworthy 9 includes six patterns spanning a wide range of techniques and styles.
This pattern will be released for individual purchase in December 2025 until then it is only available as part of Knitworthy 9.
The Lifeline Mitts feature the curved thumb gusset used in many of my most popular colourwork patterns, pared back to it’s simplest form in a classic stockinette mitten or fingerless mitt that’s perfect for stash-busting. Enjoy the simplicity or use the pattern as a blank canvas for your own creative details, with all the maths done for you.
The mitts are worked in the round, beginning at the cuffs. Choose a classic rib to block harsh winds, or keep things clean and minimalist with a simple purled border. Comfortably placed thumb shaping is worked with a single column of increases on the palm, creating a curved line that echoes the lifeline on the hand. After finishing the increases adjacent stitches will be put on hold for the thumb and you’ll continue working in the round for the rest of the hand, for your choice of a fingerless mitt or full mitten. Finally you’ll return the held thumb stitches to the needles and complete the thumb to match the hand.
Yarn
Fingering to Chunky weight yarn. Wool and wool blends are ideal.
Gauge
This pattern includes multiple gauges, so that you can use the gauge you get with your chosen yarn. Before casting on your mitts I recommend knitting a swatch of st st in the round.
Needles
Dpns or circulars for your preferred method of working small circumferences in the round.
Notions
Stitch markers, scrap yarn
