The Lilla works up beautifully in luxurious cotton yarn. The top down design creates a pattern that’s easy to customize to scarf size or full size shawl. The basic crochet stitches combine to create an easy crochet pattern that is a three row repeat. The open mesh stitch helps create a lovely drape that works styled in the front or over your shoulders.
I chose to create large blocks of light colors for this shawl. However, the Lilla is the perfect project for either a solid color or a self striping yarn.

Lilla Shawl is a top-down triangle crochet shawl worked flat in aran weight yarn. The open mesh stitch creates a flowing drape that wears over the shoulders or ties in the front, and the three-row repeat locks in quickly enough to crochet without counting every row. Easy skill level; an ideal first shawl for crocheters ready to move past hats and scarves.

Construction and technique

• Worked top-down, flat, seamless triangle construction
Double crochet (dc) body with open mesh; three-row repeat throughout
• Stripes and color block sections; also works in a solid or self-striping yarn
• US crochet terminology throughout
• Easy skill level

Materials

Yarn: aran weight; Berroco Weekend (aran weight, 8 WPI) is the sample yarn. Cotton or any aran weight fiber works well with the mesh stitch.
Yardage: approximately 650-1,300 yards (594-1,189 m) depending on finished size
Hook: 5 mm (US 8)
Gauge: 14 sts x 8 rows = 4 inches in double crochet
Notions: tapestry needle for weaving in ends; stitch markers helpful at increase points

Sizing

• One size as written: 24 inches deep, 54 inches wide
• Stop early for a smaller shawlette, kerchief, or neck scarf; the top-down construction makes it simple to customize the finished length

The Lilla is a project worth gifting to a friend who loves handmade accessories. Bring it to a project night as a portable WIP, or grab a skein of self-striping yarn and let the color do the work for you.

Happy hooking!
