This pattern was Stage 5 of the 2013 Tour de Sock event.

When we were kids in Oregon, we floated the Little Deschutes River in a convoy of rubber rafts and inner tubes. Here’s a slow summer river for you, complete with your own raft in the middle.

Sizes and yarn: Adult S, M, L, XL; circumference at foot, in inches: 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5. Length adjustable. There’s room for all sizes of calves with the gently-shaped ribbing at the top of the sock. Pattern is most visible in solid or tonal yarns.

What’s fun about this pattern
Worked from the cuff down, this pattern is a river of swirling cables. Just follow the charts and enjoy—it stays interesting all the way.

What’s challenging about this pattern
Lots of cables, big and complex charts, but you can do it! Try cabling without a cable needle. Pay close attention to the charts and the directions.

What you should know before you begin
You should be familiar with basic sock construction, cables and charts. Written instructions guide you through the various stages of the sock, but the cable pattern is chart-based. A stitch key gives specific instructions for working each stitch in the chart.
