Little Gnomes
Christmas gnomes are secretive creatures from the tundra of Lapland. They spend most of the year underground making and baking sweet treats. On the days nearing Christmas they get more active and then, on that special day (Christmas), they hitch a ride on Santa’s sleigh and deliver sweets to everybody. Christmas gnomes are also very wise, wiser than their cousins, the garden gnomes.
These dolls are inspired by Scandinavian folklore: a Tomtenisse. A Tomtenisse is a little creature no more than 3 feet with a long beard and colorful clothes.
The gnome and mushroom house are easy to make. You can only use single crochet stitches (US) or double crochet stitches (UK). They are made from No 5 yarn (Bulky, Chunky, Craft, Rug) and a 5.5 mm hook (US: I/9, UK: 5). The instructions include the gnome and mushroom house. The gnome and mushroom can stand by themselves.
Sizes
You can make the gnomes and mushrooms bigger or smaller, without changing the patterns. The gnome is about 5 inches/ 12.5 cm high. The mushroom house is 7 inches/ 17.5 cm high. The size of the dolls depend on the size of crochet hook, thickness of yarn and how you stuff them; a bigger hook and thicker yarn make bigger gnomes. A gnome stuffed tightly is bigger than a loosely stuffed gnome.
For the big gnome and big mushroom house: I used a 5.5 mm hook and No 5 yarn (Bulky, Chunky, Craft, Rug): Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Chunky.
The medium sized gnome: I used a 4.5 mm hook and No 3 yarn DK: Schachenmayr Cotton Time, Metallic yarn Twilley’s Goldfingering (crochet them together; one cotton and one metallic).
The smallest size: I used a 3 mm hook and No 2 yarn (Sport, Baby): Schachenmayr Catania, DMC Petra.
p.s. In the materials list is a Yarn Indicator Brush. Which is a very specific item which is not readily available. You can instead use any comb, brush or needle to split the yarn of the beard.
