This is a slouchy bonnet, knitted in the round and worked in one piece from the bottom up. After casting on, the brim is worked in 1x1 rib before commencing onto the lace body of the bonnet. This is then followed by the crown shaping and an I-cord finish.

Instructions for this bonnet are provided in written format only.

The design on this bonnet was inspired by the hat worn by Ruby in the TV show, Once Upon A Time. Red/Ruby was my favourite character from the show and I just loved her hat from the moment I saw it. This bonnet is not as slouchy as the hat that Ruby wore … it is more fitted with crown shaping too.

I’ve called it a bonnet rather than a beret as I live in Stewarton, which is famous for its bonnets.

Stewarton has been known as The Bonnet Toun for centuries and although it is recorded that The Bonnet Trade of Stewarton existed in 1650, it is likely that woollen bonnets were being knitted in and around the town long before that.
