Little Village Street is a modular shawl that turns your yarn stash into a charming neighbourhood! Knit row by row, house by house, this pattern lets you build a winding street of colourful little buildings — each one a small module, all joined together into one long, draping shawl.

Three sizes are available — small, medium, and large — and no gauge swatch is required. The finished size is entirely in your hands: the height of the houses determines the size, and the number of houses you knit determines the length. Use as many or as few as you like.

Pattern Specs & Materials

The pattern was originally designed for Dibadu Funnies Twisted Fifties, but works beautifully with any yarn weight — just make sure all yarns you combine are of equal weight.

You will need a general yarn for the houses and a contrast yarn for the roofs and basements. Plan for approximately 20–25% of your total yardage in contrast yarn.

Version 1 — Dibadu Funnies Twisted Fifties

Yarn A: Twisted Fifties “Bergtour” × 8 skeins — 8 × 192 yds/175 m (8 × 1.75 oz/50 g)
Yarn B: Twisted Fifties “Piratengold” × 2 skeins — 2 × 192 yds/175 m (2 × 1.75 oz/50 g)
Needle: US 2 / 3 mm, 24” or 32” circular
Finished dimensions: 208 cm / 82” long, 38 cm / 15” deep

Version 2 — Schoppel Laceball (held double) + Schoppel Crazy Boy

Yarn A (Side 1): Schoppel Laceball “Elefantentreffen” — held double to match weight
Yarn A (Side 2): Schoppel Laceball “Rauchzeichen” — held double to match weight
Yarn B (contrast): Schoppel Crazy Boy “Kurg Georg”
Note: The Laceball was worked with two strands held together throughout, to create longer gradients and to match the weight of the Crazy Boy
Finished dimensions: 188 cm / 74” long, 35.5 cm / 14” deep
A Stash-Buster’s Dream

Little Village Street is a brilliant way to use up yarn leftovers and small skeins — think mini skeins, advent calendar sets, or those precious odds and ends you can’t bear to part with. As long as all your yarns are roughly the same weight, anything goes! Every house can be knitted in a different yarn, making the finished shawl a true celebration of your stash.

To help you plan your colour layout before you cast on, the pattern includes a stencil of the full shawl that you can colour in — a lovely way to play with your palette and make sure every house sits exactly where you want it.

Construction & Techniques

The houses are knitted individually in garter stitch, and the roofs and basements are worked in one continuous go, joining everything together as you go. The pattern uses a crochet cast-on, short rows with wrap and turn, and chain stitches knitwise and purlwise to move between sections cleanly. Detailed photo tutorials for every technique are included at the end of the pattern — no experience with these methods is required before you begin.

If you prefer alternative short row methods, you are welcome to substitute them.
