Lizzie Bennet Socks
The Lizzie Bennet Socks are the sixth in a collection of patterns named after women from Jane Austen novels. I like to design the socks with an eye to what the character might like to knit. Lizzie is hardworking and talented, and I’m sure she would be a capable knitter, but she would prefer a pattern that is easy to memorize and includes some stockinette sections, giving her time to feel her big feelings.
These socks are worked from the cuff down. They are written for magic-loop knitting and include a heel flap and gusset, but feel free to substitute your own style of knitting and preferred heel method. The irregular ribbing (follow the chart/instructions!) blends as seamlessly as possible into the lace pattern for a nice effect. The lace pattern is included only on the top of the sock - the back of the leg and bottom of the foot are in plain stockinette.
7/24/25 update: there are now three sizes for this pattern (56 sts, 64 sts, 72 sts). Please note that charted sizes are all in separate PDFs. You may download all three PDFs or just the one you need.
My samples of this were knitted in hand-dyed 80/20 yarn (the blue) and Rosa Pomar Mondim (the red). I have included a couple of other yarn suggestions: Rambler from The Woolly Thistle, which is similar to Mondim in its construction and woolliness (and, like Rambler is 100% wool) and a special Lizzie Bennet colorway from At Haynes House yarn, a local-to-me Maryland dyer (Terri) who has all sorts of stunning Jane Austen inspired colorways!
This pattern includes both charted and written instructions. I hope you find it accessible! Please contact me at barnabyknits@gmail.com with any questions.
