In the mad rush of Mexico City, on la Avenida 5 de Mayo, sits an old palace covered in the famous blue-and-white tiles of Puebla. I’ve long planned to design something inspired by la Casa de los Azulejos, but things never seemed to click until I had these two beautiful skeins of yarn left over from another project. I suddenly realized they were just the colors I needed to bring my old idea to life. One is a brilliant blue that’s almost an exact match for the famed tiles, while the other is a silvery gray scattered with brown, blue and black speckles, perfect to reflect the signs of age and wear on the otherwise white tiles. With these yarns in hand, the design easily came together, and a pair of soft, warm mitts with a standout all-over colorwork pattern was born.
