Lonabrak Scarf
Living in Shetland, surrounded by its more than 2000 km of coastline, one is forever conscious of the sea. For generations, Shetlanders have drawn sustenance and inspiration from the changeable waters around them, an influence that is plain to see in many Shetland lace patterns. ‘The Print of the Wave’, recurring in many forms throughout Shetland lace knitting, is one such pattern. I have a particular fondness for it, as it was a favourite of
my Great Aunt Emma, who taught me so much about lace knitting. Shetland knitters often have their preferred version of this cherished pattern; here I have chosen to work it in stocking stitch in indigo-dyed Langsoond DK. Lönabrak is a Shetland dialect word meaning the swell and surge of the sea breaking on the shore.

Pattern Notes
Lönabrak scarf is worked flat in one piece from one short end to the other. There is a border of garter stitch all around to keep the edges from curling. You can shorten or lengthen your scarf by working fewer or more vertical repeats of the chart. You might find it useful to place stitch markers 5 stitches in from each edge to separate the garter stitch border from the lace pattern.
