Long Weekend
Save 20% through July 31 with code WEEKEND
My studio is filled with yarn, sketches, swatches, notes, and works in progress. I have many options of projects to work on at any given time. I also love the idea of a special project for a vacation. Being able to take a smaller project with me feels ideal: something that doesn’t require many colors or have details I’m bound to breeze past while visiting with friends, And, of course, the looming question in my brain: can I finish it during the trip? It’s a bit of a personal challenge, and I’m here for it! LONG WEEKEND is another shawl-like scarf (or scarf-like shawl? I still haven’t decided!) in my portfolio designed for a special skein of yarn. The initial set-up for this project provides for smooth sailing for the rest of the journey. The size is easily modifiable; just use a gram scale to keep track of your yarn used. Samples are shown in a jumbo 150 g skein of fingering weight yarn for a shawl-y piece and a slightly smaller skein of sport weight handspun yarn to yield a more scarf-y size. Create a custom-sized piece during your own long weekend.
YARN – SAMPLE 1
Soliloquy by Leading Men Fiber Arts, 100% Superwash BFL, 657 yd / 601 m per 150 g, 1 skein, www.leadingmenfiberarts.com
Sample shown in colorway Without a Paddle, 637 yd / 583 m (146 g).
YARN – SAMPLE 2
2-ply sport weight handspun (approximately 16-17 WPI), 100% Falkland, 319 yd / 292 g per 121 g. Fiber by Into the Whirled, www.intothewhirled.com.
Sample shown in colorway Cordera, 270 yd / 247 m (104 g).
This design has flexible sizing and can be adapted for different weights of yarn. Samples shown used fingering weight yarn and 2-ply sport weight handspun yarn. I suggest working with 100-200 g of fingering to DK weight yarn for this piece, adjusting needle size and number of repeats to accommodate available yarn. A gram scale is recommended for this design.
DIMENSIONS – SAMPLE 1
Length: 90” / 229 cm
Depth at center: 13” / 33 cm
DIMENSIONS – SAMPLE 2
Length: 55” / 140 cm
Depth at center: 9” / 23 cm
GAUGE & NEEDLES – SAMPLE 1
20 stitches and 40 rows = 4” / 10 cm in garter stitch, blocked
US 5 / 3.75 mm circular needle, minimum length 16” / 40 cm or size needed to get gauge
GAUGE & NEEDLES – SAMPLE 2
18 stitches and 36 rows = 4” / 10 cm in garter stitch, blocked
US 6 / 4.0 mm circular needle, minimum length 16” / 40 cm or size needed to get gauge
Gauge is not critical but will impact finished size and yarn requirements.
Working with a different weight of yarn? No problem! Gauge will differ, but the concept of the design remains the same! Adjust needle size per preferred gauge.
