Lost in a Dream
Lost in a Dream
Somewhere between waking and dreaming, these cables begin to wander…
Lost in a Dream is an ankle sock covered in delicate, flowing cable and twisted-stitch details. The pattern combines intricate-looking texture with the satisfying rhythm of working cables, creating a pair of socks that feels special without being an overwhelming project.
The design is worked from the cuff down and features a decorative cable panel that travels down the leg and over the foot. The socks are finished with a traditional gusset and heel construction and are worked seamlessly in the round.
And because I know some of you like your socks to be perfectly symmetrical: the pattern includes instructions for making the two socks mirror images of each other by reversing the cable crossings on the second sock.
The pattern
Lost in a Dream includes both written instructions and charts, so you can use whichever method you prefer—or switch between them as you knit.
The pattern is available in five sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL), with finished foot/ankle circumferences of approximately 16.5 (19, 21, 23.5, 26) cm / 6.5 (7.5, 8.25, 9.25, 10.25”).
Choose your size with approximately 1 cm / ½“ of negative ease to help the cables sit beautifully on the foot.
Yarn & needles
You’ll need approximately 40–50 g of fingering-weight yarn, depending on foot length and width.
The sample was knitted in Novita Natural Collection Merino 4 ply, using 44 g for size S with a 39 EU / 23 cm foot.
Needles:
2.5 mm / US 1.5, or whatever size you need to obtain gauge. The socks can be worked with DPNs, Magic Loop, or another method suitable for small-circumference knitting.
Gauge:
32 sts × 36 rows = 10 × 10 cm / 4” in stockinette stitch in the round.
You’ll need
- Fingering-weight yarn
- 2.5 mm / US 1.5 needles
- Cable needle
- 4 stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
A little more than just a pair of socks
I designed Lost in a Dream for knitters who enjoy having something interesting happening on their needles. The cables and twisted stitches create plenty of texture to keep you engaged, while the finished socks remain light, wearable and easy to slip into your summer project bag.
Perfect for: cable lovers, sock knitters looking for a more intricate project, and anyone who likes their handmade socks to feel a little bit like wearable art.
