Lostren and Ily are sisters. They’re close, but not quite twins. Each shawl is worked in garter-stitch stripes, edged with a border that ends in a picot bind off. Both shawls are wing-shaped -- wider at one end than the other.

How do they differ? Ily is knitted in drapey Tern (wool/silk). And Ily’s stripes start narrow and space themselves out as the shawl gets wider; the border is worked in a slip-stitch pattern before the picot bind off.

On the other hand, Lostren’s stripes are evenly spaced from left to right, and the border is worked in garter stitch. It’s knitted in Owl (alpaca/wool), good for a cozy shawl to wrap up in.

Of course, shawls being what they are (so flexible), you can work Lostren in Tern, if you prefer, and Ily in Owl. Their gauges aren’t the same, but really, who’s measuring?

The shawl is worked sideways, from the narrow tip. Increases are made along the side edge every RS row, to be used later for the border. WS row increases gradually widen the body of the shawl.
