The ethereal geometry of this heirloom pi shawl conjures stars wheeling overhead and trees reflected in water. Worked in Vale, it makes a beautiful throw to display in your home or an exquisite shawl for dressy occasions. Lucca is a meditative knit, with each successive ring bringing a new pattern to freshen your interest.
Construction
The shawl is worked from the center out, beginning with a Circular Cast On. It uses traditional Pi Shawl construction (Elizabeth Zimmermann’s method) and is shaped through the use of concentric rings of increases. A few stitches are decreased after the Pi Increase Round if necessary to achieve the correct stitch multiple for the following chart; otherwise, no stitches are increased or decreased between the concentric rings of increases. A knitted-on edging is worked back and forth and attached to the live stitches around the shawl circumference at the end of every RS row to finish the shawl (in place of a traditional bind off).
Yardage
1115 (1555) yards of lace weight wool yarn
Yarn
3 (4) skeins of Brooklyn Tweed Vale (100% American Rambouillet wool; 450 yards/50 grams)
Large shawl photographed in Vale yarn, color Sashiko
Small shawl photographed in Plains yarn, color Waxwing
Gauge
Small Shawl: 22 stitches & 32 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch, after blocking
One 12-stitch repeat from Chart B or C measures approximately 2¼“ wide
Large Shawl: 18 stitches & 22 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch, after blocking
One 12-stitch repeat from Chart B or C measures approximately 2¾“ wide
Note: Finished width of repeat will vary once shawl is blocked into circular shape.
Needles
One each 16” and 32” circular needles and one set of double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size needed to obtain gauge listed
Small Shawl suggested Size: 3 mm (US 2½)
Large Shawl suggested Size: 4½ mm (US 7)
32” circular needle can be used instead of DPNs if using the Magic Loop method for working small circumferences in the round (i.e., the center of the shawl). If using only circular needles for knitting the shawl, you will require one spare DPN for working attached edging.
