The Lucian Collar is a decorative, sculptural knit. The base circumference is cast on and the collar worked from base to neckline in the round. A web-like form with draping strands of stockinette stitch is achieved through sequences of bound off and cast on stitches.

Whether worn as a decorative accessory, costume element or as a modification applied to a pre-existing sweater, this collar approaches the idea of a knit piece from a different angle.

The idea for this collar was inspired by spider webs, their form clearly articulated when droplets of moisture cling to the delicate lines of silk. Spiders that live in my house are all referred to as “Lucian” so hence the name for this accessory.

Finished Dimensions

Neck Circumference: 22” / 55.5 cm.
Base Circumference: 76” / 193 cm.
Length (at shortest point): 3.75” / 9.5 cm.

Gauge

22 stitches & 24 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch, worked in the round, on size US 8– 5mm needles, blocked.

16 stitches = 4” / 10 cm in I-cord bind off, on size US 8– 5mm needles, blocked.

Swatch note– The I-cord bind off is the most important measurement for fit purposes. I recommend working a swatch in stockinette stitch then binding off using the I-cord bind off to check the gauge of the bind off.

Notions

Tapestry needle, stitch marker.

Yarn

Malabrigo, Rios (Pure Merino Superwash; 100 g / 210 yards / 192 meters)

Color– Ivory
1 skein

Or approximately 165 yards / 150 meters of Worsted weight yarn.
Alternate versions made with Frank Ochre & Black

Needles

US 8– 5mm circular needle with a cable length of 36” / 91.5 cm.

This pattern uses the magic loop technique for smaller circumferences. Double-pointed needles or smaller circumference cable lengths can be substituted.
