Lumesadu Gloves
by Nancy Bush
Scholars believe the inspiration for what we think of as typical Fair Isle patterns, specifically the classic OXO pattern, came from the Baltic region. Many of the patterns on knitted mittens and gloves in the Estonian knitting tradition were derived from weaving patterns used in weaving belts, which almost always have X and O figured patterns. Following the tradition for Estonian gloves, Nancy Bush’s version features a limited color palette for the pattern stitches against a solid background. The name, lumesadu, is the Estonian word for “snowfall.”
