Lyuda Cowl
My Ukrainian friend Lyuda brought me the most thoughtful gift when she visited the U.S. in summer 2021 —a Russian-language Japanese stitch dictionary. She was a little incredulous when I assured her that yes, I could absolutely understand and use the book, as the charts and symbols were a universal language. To prove my point, I whipped up the original prototype of this bulky cowl as a gift before Lyuda returned home. Shown here in Butter Bulky from Seismic Yarn & Dyeworks, the cowl is quick, cozy, and beautiful—a special knit you can make, too.
This pattern contains both fully charted and written instructions.
Recommended Yarn:
Seismic Yarn & Dyeworks Butter Bulky, one skein — 100% superwash Merino — 109 yds (100 m) per 100 g skein. Shown in colorway White Opal. Cowl will take most of skein—sample used approx. 100 yds (91 m).
Sizing:
23” (58 cm) around base and 19” (48 cm) around body, 8.5” (22 cm) high.
Blocked Gauge:
16 sts and 20 rounds to 4” (10 cm) in Lace Pattern, 17 sts and 18 rounds to 4” (10 cm) in Base Ribbing Pattern, both knit in the round.
Needles:
US 10 (6 mm) circular needle, 16” (40 cm) length.
PLEASE NOTE: I knit the sample with a US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needle, but I knit on the tight side. If you are at all a tight knitter, I would suggest using a US 10.5 needle so that the cowl is not too snug on the neck. Please note that changes in gauge will affect finished size, look of motifs, and amount of yarn used.
Other Materials:
Four stitch markers (one distinct to mark beginning of round), tapestry needle.
Many thanks to Eva of Seismic Yarn & Dyeworks for her support! This pattern was professionally tech edited by Lisa Beth Houchins (Meanest Mommy Knits).
