This is a sided-to-side shawl, growing in increasing rows from a point at the side to the center depth, then in decreasing rows to the other side. It can be made with a single cake of Lion Brand Mandala yarn, or with 590 yd of other DK weight yarn.

Caught in a MAD Romance

I thought I was happy, certainly I was content – knowing all was well, and things were working out perfectly. Life was good, and my dreams and plans were coming true, just as I had hoped.

And then I heard the first whisper in my head, saying “what if…” and the daydreams began. Fantasies of subtle changes which would lead to unknown consequences. Questions and new ideas to experiment with, instead of the predictable result, a mystery was ahead of me…

Oh, I did enjoy making the Zephyr Slide, loved every minute of it, knowing the shape and size it would be, and I could even plan out the yardage it would take. But after I finished it, I began to wonder what would happen if I skipped more at the bottom edge, then perversely added an extra Shell there as well?

I had to find out so began experimenting. This resulted in a pleasing curve on the left side. But I had lost the symmetry of the Zepyhr Slide, and the left side was now growing faster than the right side. However, it was too late to stop – I was caught in the romance of the chase and had to continue. What if I did more increasing at the neck edge to lengthen the rows faster? That helped, but not enough. I needed MORE, and I knew I was hooked! So I continued down the path, loving every minute of the wild ride, and finally had the shawl I desired.
