Madame Entrechat Fingering
This is the fingering weight version of Madame Entrechat (which is the grown-up version of my little Entrechat).
Is it chilly in the office? Need the perfect layer to compliment a pretty dress? Ideal for gift-giving (even for teens!) and a great way to use up a few lone skeins of that special yarn, this fun, fast knit will be your go-to when you’re looking for an easy project with a sophisticated result.
Do you have leftover yarn? Love the mommy-and-me look? Check out the baby/child version here
CONSTRUCTION: This shrug is constructed in an unusual manner. It is knit from the top down, from the back neck and shoulders to the underarms. The sleeve stitches are then put on hold and the back stitches are worked together with stitches picked up along each front raglan (diagonal edges of sleeve sections) to form the back and fronts of the body in one piece. An easy textured band adds visual interest. For all sizes except XXXL, short rows are worked in the back. Sleeves are worked in the round, and can be worked as short, elbow-length or long sleeves.
~~~
SKILLS REQUIRED: casting-on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, picking up stitches, yarn over, for all sizes except XXXL: short rows (explanations provided).
SIZING:
Finished garment has cross-back measurement of 15 (16.5, 17.75, 18.75 // 19.25, 22, 23) inches or 38 (42, 45, 47.5 // 49, 56, 58.5) cm.
To fit bust sizes 29 (33, 37, 41 // 45, 49, 53) inches or 73.5 (84, 94, 104 // 114.5, 124.5, 134.5) cm.
Note about Size Selection: I recommend selecting the size based on your actual cross-back measurement (measure the width of your back from center of underarm to center of underarm, with both arms down).
YARN REQUIREMENTS:
-
For short sleeve version: Approximately 500 (700, 800, 900 // 975, 1150, 1250) yds or 457 (640, 731, 823 // 891, 1052, 1143) meters of fingering to sport weight yarn.
-
For elbow sleeve version: Approximately 550 (750, 850, 950 // 1025, 1200, 1300) yds or 503 (686, 777, 869 // 937, 1097, 1189) meters of fingering to sport weight yarn.
-
For long sleeve version: Approximately 600 (800, 900, 1000 // 1100, 1300, 1400) yds or 549 (731, 823, 914 // 1006, 1189, 1280) meters of fingering to sport weight yarn.
- US 3 or 3.25 mm circular needles or size needed to get garter stitch gauge, 29” or 74 cm or more in length.
- US 5 or 3.75 mm circular needles or size needed to get stockinette gauge. Note: Garment is not knit in the round. Circular needles are needed because they hold all the stitches easily and because of their flexibility. Set of matching double-pointed needles for sleeves.
NOTIONS:
- tapestry needle
- two pieces of scrap yarn to use as holders for sleeves
- one 3/4-inch or 2 cm diameter button
GAUGE:
-
24 sts x 36 rows = 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch using larger needles, after blocking.
-
24 sts x 56 rows (28 ridges) = 4 inches or 10 cm in garter stitch using smaller needles, after blocking.
