Through the end of day on December 21, 2025, Mafic Light is 20% off! No coupon code required; this discount is taken automatically at checkout.

I’m also running a multi-pattern purchase sale for the month of December—see my portfolio main page for details on that. (It’s basically just 20% off the purchase of multiple patterns. But my portfolio main page is kind of cool right now; it has a lot of neat shapes right at the top.)

Knit Mafic Light (mostly) flat in less than half a standard skein of nice sockweight yarn, with no seams or extra finishing. Faux seams make it interesting and reversible; a little knitted hem adds a nice finishing touch.

For this project, as with the original Mafic and Felsic, nearly all the work of this hat is flat; you’ll be knitting plain garter stitch and doing very little purling. However, this design does require a 16” circular needle, because the final hem is knit in the round. But you still won’t need DPNs, and there are no standard crown decreases.

This design is a nice showcase for scraps—the sample shown uses Juliespins Euro Fingering in Packham Pear, Cascade Heritage Sock in Mossy Rock and Cedar Green, and some Malabrigo Yarn Sock in Lettuce.

Materials:

  • 200-220 yards, or half a standard skein of most nice sockweight/fingeringweight yarns
  • 1 16”+ circular needle in US3/3.25mm, or size needed for gauge
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • scrap yarn and crochet hook for provisional cast-on

Gauge:
Gauge is 26 sts and 56 rows over 4”/10cm, in blocked garter stitch, worked flat.. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Measurements:
This .PDF includes instructions for two sizes: one fits most adults and one fits kids for whom the standard size would be a little big. Garter stitch lends this piece considerable stretch.

The large version is about 8“/20cm tall and 8.25“/21cm wide, and should fit 21-22”/53-56cm head circumferences; the smaller version is about 7.25“/18.4cm tall and 7.75“/20cm across the hem, and fits 19-20”/48-51cm head circumference.
