Magic Hour
Magic Hour is a versatile shawl/wrap that features 4 different colors of DK-weight yarn and can be worn in multiple ways thanks to the addition of buttons and the eyelet edge (which serves as buttonholes)! See photos for examples of 5 different ways you can wear your Magic Hour.
Named after the term photographers often use to describe the time just before/after sunrise or sunset, Magic Hour’s colors were inspired by a photo taken by my husband Jeff here in Freeport, Maine (also featured above in the photos).
Check out my Magic Hour tips page for tutorials on all of the techniques used in the pattern plus additional tips such as: making it larger, using less colors, other yarn options, and how to attach buttons.
Pattern Information:
Finished Measurements(after blocking):
• Center Depth: approx 29”/74 cm
• Wingspan: approx 60”/152 cm
• Each side length at bottom: approx 35”/89 cm
My tips page provides info on how to adjust the sizing
Yarn: approx 800 yds total of DK-weight yarn, shown in Craggy Tweed by The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers (85% superwash BFL, 15% NEP; 100g = 231 yds). Quantities for each color listed below:
• Color A : approx 75 yds, shown in color Dumplin, 1 skein.
• Color B: approx 150 yds, shown in color Monarch, 1 skein.
• Color C: approx 230 yds, shown in color Eagle Eye, 1 skein.
• Color D: approx 345 yds, shown in color Dirty Little Dandelion, 2 skeins.
Yarn Notes: When worn, color A will be the one closest to your neck. Also, an easy way to make this shawl larger is to add a 5th color block (I list this as one of my sizing adjustment options on my tips page). If you would like to do this, I suggest approx 550-600 yds of this 5th color.
Gauge:
21 sts & 30 rows = 4”/10 cm in St st after blocking*
Exact gauge is not critical but it will affect your finished measurements and yarn usage.
Needles & Other Supplies:
• US 6/4 mm 32”/80 cm circ, or size needed to obtain gauge.
• 2 stitch markers.
• Tapestry needle to weave in ends.
• 5 buttons, 3/4” (I suggest light buttons to help avoid too much pulling on the eyelet edge - I used plastic buttons that look like wood but are indeed made of a very light plastic, purchased at Joann’s)
