This pattern is a formulaic type of pattern. The charts are coloured for easy reading.

The thumb is an afterthought style of thumb and is placed at a waste yarn insertion - there is pictorial on how to pick-up the stitches from a waste yarn insertion.

There are two basic patterns, one written for an average medium woman’s hand and one for the baby mitten.

The basic patterns are written for a plain mitten with the fair-isle options outlined after. Once you understand how to knit the basic pair of mittens the options can come into play. The Fair-isle mittens shown took from 11 (the orange) to 15 colours.

The baby mittens shown took only three. The baby mittens are shown are a bit of a fiddly knit as there are three colours to most rows. But they are small and go fast!

Included in this pattern are the average lengths and sizes of a variety of mittens from children’s to men’s, including how many stitches to cast-on and how wide to make the thumb insertion.

Also included are simple repeating fair-isle charts with instructions on how to use them to design your own mitten. The charts are coloured, this is to make them easier to read, just substitute in the colours you are using.
