This shawl is reminiscent of lying on the grass and looking up at a forest canopy. Imagine the cool green shade of a summer day.

Size: Mallorn comes in 2 shapes, a Half Circle and a Crescent. Size depends on your gauge, yarn and number of rows knitted. The Half Circle sample is knit with a light fingering/fingering yarn, has 224 rows and measures 72“ (184 cm) wingspan and has a depth of 36“ (92 cm). The Crescent sample is knit with a fingering weight yarn, has 120 rows and a wingspan of 40“ (102 cm) and a depth of 18“ (45 cm).

Yarn and Gauge are your choice: A gauge swatch pattern is supplied along with information on computing the amount of yarn and beads needed and the size your shawl will be. Special consideration apply if you are using a gradient. More information is in the Notes on Gradients (page 3).

The Half Circle sample is knit with Queensland United Foursome, a light fingering/fingering yarn and used almost the full cake: 1531 yds (1400 m). A pattern motif is 4“ (10 cm) long by 3.5“ (9 cm) wide. It uses 3105 beads.

The Crescent sample is knit with Zino, a fingering weight yarn and used 1 ¼ skeins, about 550 yards (500 m). A pattern motif is 4 ¼“ (10.8 cm) wide by 3“ (7.6 cm) long. It uses 1625 beads.

Beads are optional. If you use them, I recommend using an 8/0, or 6/0 if your yarn is heavier.

Needles: The Half Circle sample used a size US 2 (2.75 mm) and a D-3 (3.25 mm) crochet hook. The Crescent sample used a size US 4 (3.50 mm) and a G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook. You choose the needle size appropriate for your yarn and gauge choice.

Notions: You will also need up to 27 markers, 3 or 5 unique markers and a darning needle. You also might want a row counter, a tape measure, light closeable markers, a yarn bra or sock to put your yarn in, a dpn for working the bind off and a knitters repair tool. This tool has a crochet hook on one end and a point on the other.

Difficulty: Advanced: Skills required are basic lace stitches, beading stitches, short rows and 2 stitches that are non standard. One is increasing in a beaded stitch and the other is tying a knot. These are described in detail.

Some people will want to end their shawl at a different row. A few rows work well. Alternate endings are also available as PDFs. If you choose to end your project at Row 20, you must not do any increase sections in your final repeat.
