Manitoba is a triangular or half-circle shawl, depending on how you look at it, beginning with leaves in a diamond pattern and ending with an edge of flowers arranged within arches. Manitoba is bound off using simple crochet chain and single crochet stitches. Incorporate nupps or beads as you please, or leave them out. A suggestion for a simple nupp or bead placement is included in the pattern.

Yarn suggestion:

Manos del Uruguay Lace 2-ply Alpaca/silk/cashmere, 438 yards (400 m)/50g skein. The shawl as shown uses 876 yards (800 m) or two skeins.

Fleece Artist Saldanha Two, Lace 2-ply 100 % merino, 874 yards (800 m) /100 g skein. One skein would be enough for the size shown here.

Fingering might work too, but keep in mind that the edge is 72 rows, so keep your repeats of chart 1 to a minimum when using heavier weight yarn. Unless you want a large shawl, of course.

Nupps use a lot of yarn! If you plan to do more nupps than the shawl as written, remember to buy more yarn.

Needles used: US 2 (2.75 mm). All the test knitters used larger needles, however.

As always when knitting lace, gauge is not important to get the fit you need. Always use a needle size that gives you a fabric you like. Every knitter’s tension is unique.

Shawl measures: 150 x 65 cm (59 inches by 25,5 inches) relaxed after blocking. See also the test knitters versions for yardage and sizes when knit in different yarn types.

Also needed: Stitch markers, scrap yarn for CO, spare needle same size as your project needles and a crochet hook size US 1 ½ (2.5 mm) for the provisional CO and for the BO.
