Many Hands Scarf
This pattern was originally published as Close Knit’s contribution to the 2021 Rose City Yarn Crawl, March 4-14, 2021 in Portland, Oregon. This pattern is available for download individually or as part of the 2021 Pattern Collection: Gratitude.
Gratitude makes me think about all the hands that touch a skein of yarn before we knit with it: the people who care for the sheep, including farmers, shearers, veterinarians, food producers; the people who process the yarn from wool to skein, including shearers, dyers, spinners; the people who get the yarn to the knitter, including yarn sales reps and local yarn store owners and employees; the office staff who help each of those people accomplish their jobs, such as bookkeepers, and even the telephone and internet service providers who connect all these people to each other in a fast-moving world. There are also the hands of the person who taught you to knit, the person who helped pick up a dropped stitch, and perhaps the person who wrote a book or recorded a video tutorial that helped you learn a new stitch or technique. The little flower stitches in this scarf represent all those hands which have touched our yarn and made it possible for us to be knitters.
