Mapledown
Leaves etched in gold foil adorn the book’s canvas spine, and it has been placed haphazardly on the live edge side table. A cup of freshly brewed coffee is slowly losing its warmth beside the book, both items resting in anticipation of a slow afternoon. Their owner bustles about the house, gathering mending and ticking off tasks spun upon a neverending list of things that must be done. Laundry shoved into the washer, a check scrawled quickly for that overdue bill, ingredients yanked from the cupboard and shoved onto the counter for dinner. Gray light from the stormy day filters through the sheer curtains, beckoning for a pause. The coffee has grown cold, but the richness remains, and the list must be shortened enough by now because finally, finally- the book’s owner has decided to pause for a moment. The golden leaves glimmer in defiance of the quiet day as the first page is opened.
