March Charm - A New Shawl Pattern by Ursa Major KNITS
Looking for a project that looks sophisticated but is easy to knit? Something you don’t need to constantly check the pattern for row by row? A design you can work on while traveling, chatting with friends, or watching TV? March Charm is your answer.
This pattern is the ultimate versatile knit. You can make it in any size with any yarn weight - from a sweet little shawlette using just 400 yards to a generous wrap with 1600 yards. All you need are two yarns with a bit of contrast - or lots of it! As long as you can distinguish them reasonably well from each other, you’re good to go. They can be different yarn weights, different fiber contents - anything is possible. Of course, you can also use two different colors of the same yarn. Whether you shop your stash or treat yourself to something new is entirely up to you. For a small shawlette, you’ll need approximately 200 yards of each yarn, making March Charm ideal for gift knitting too.
No Math, No Fuss - Just Knit
You don’t need to calculate or knit a gauge swatch. Simply choose two yarns that intuitively feel right together and select a needle size that allows your heavier yarn to knit up with a nice, relaxed drape. Then you’re ready to cast on! Just like the name March Charm is almost a mirror image of itself, the pattern consists of a waxing and a waning part. Weigh both yarns separately before you begin, then knit the waxing part until you’ve used 50% of one yarn - making sure you still have at least 50% of the other yarn remaining so you’ll have enough for the waning part.
The principle is so simple that after knitting the first four repeats, you can easily work without the written pattern. However, if you prefer to follow along, all modules are provided in both written and charted form.
This airy beauty was created for Dibadu’s March Farbchronik. I combined Twisted Fifties (a relatively thick, smooth yarn) with Flufftikuss (a fluffy mohair dream). For my sample, I used Yarn A: Twisted Fifties “Herzensmut” 100g/3.5oz, 300m/328yds and Yarn B: Flufftikuss “Blütenhauch” 28g/1oz, 236m/258yds to create a shawl measuring 200cm/79” in length and 32cm/12.5” in depth. Whether you choose Dibadu’s monthly colors or explore other shades and yarn qualities from their rich collection - everything is possible!
Endless Possibilities
I also knitted a very large shawl using Monk Modal - “Peppermint” as Yarn A and “Butterfly” as Yarn B. I used approximately 800m/875yds of each yarn for a shawl measuring 280cm/110” in length and 36cm/14.25” in depth.
For a petite version, I worked with Schoppel yarns: Wool Finest “Hut ab” as Yarn A (just 48g/1.7oz, 192m/210yds) and Edition 6 “Leise Töne” as Yarn B (only 20g/0.7oz, 120m/132yds) for a delicate shawlette measuring 142cm/56” in length and 23cm/9” in depth.
