Margarete
Second Design of the Wollmeise Yarn Club 2017
Inspiration: Margarete - the mother of Claudia (a.k.a the Wollmeise) was the very special inspiration for this design, so I looked to styles, stitch patterns and techniques which were popular when Margarete was a young woman. The starting point was a swing jacket, a must-have garment in the early 1950’s, which was worn high-hip length, with wide, cuffed three-quarter length sleeves and a fold-back collar.
Swing jackets were popularly made in either one solid or two contrasting colours, the two colour versions often featuring tweeds or check fabrics. In creating the “Margarete” and “Rosalie”, colourways, Claudia has come up with two beautiful shades which perfectly reflect the fashions of the era.
I chose two stitch patterns which were widely used in knit designs of the time; Star Tweed (used for the body of the jacket) and Half Brioche (also called Rose Fabric in 1943) which was used for the collar, cuffs and facings.)
The jacket is worked flat in separate pieces and is seamed together at the sides, shoulders and underarms. This not only gives you a taste of vintage knitting methods, but seaming provides structure and stability to the jacket.
