The Market Cowl is a kerchief style cowl knit in waffle stitch. The cowl is knit flat, from the bottom point upwards, increasing until the width is reached, and then knit straight for an additional length. The edges of the straight section are then seamed together with mattress stitch. This construction results in a shorter back neck portion which helps the cowl sit nicer around the neck. This cowl pattern is offered in 3 different size options (S, M, L). My sample was knit in Size Medium.

Sizes Offered:
Small, Medium, Large
Cowl width (laid flat):
20, 22.5, 25 inches / 50, 56.5, 62.5 cm
Cowl length (laid flat):
16, 18.5, 21 / 40, 46.5, 52.5 cm
Back neck length (laid flat):
5.25, 6, 7 / 13, 15, 17.5 cm
Size selection:
Cowl width will become the cowl circumference after seaming, and should be your primary measurement used to select size. The back neck length and full cowl length are less important for selecting size, as the length gets bunched up as the cowl sits around your neck. If you are in between sizes, size down for a more snug fit (better for functionality in the cold) or size up for a loose drapey fit (better for more of a fashion accessory than for warmth).
Yarn recommended:
One colour of DK weight yarn (or fingering weight held double for a DK gauge). Some testers were also able to get gauge with a worsted weight yarn.
Sample - Cesium Yarn Merino Sock held double (463 yds / 423 m per 100 g, 75% superwash Merino wool, 25% nylon) - Miss Scarlet.
A great commercial alternative is Knitpicks Swish DK!
Yardage recommended:
The yardage listed below is for one strand of DK. If you choose to knit your cowl with fingering weight held double, you will need the below yardage for EACH strand.
227, 295, 370 yds / 208, 270, 338 meters
Note: Estimates are based on my recommended length and width values, and yardage constants calculated based on my samples plus a 5% buffer.
Needles recommended:
4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 - I recommend using circular needles with a 32 inch / 80 cm cord
Note: You may need another needle size to meet gauge.
Gauge:
In waffle stitch, worked flat, blocked but unstretched:
19 sts x 34 rows = 4 x 4 “ (10 x 10 cm)
