Marled Magic Shawl
Gather a collection of colorful yarns and marl them together in this modular Westknits shawl. Always hold two strands of yarn together and paint each section with the recommended marled techniques. Mesh eyelets, seed stitch, garter stitch, and brioche compose the textured shapes. Each section is like a mini project keeping you entertained throughout the entire shawl.
This pattern is also available in Westknits Bestknits 3 - Shawl Evolution. If you download this pattern from the Westknits Bestknits e-book, the yarn and color information may be slightly altered to reflect the samples photographed in the book, but the instructions remain the same.
Sizes
Medium (Large)
Finished Measurements
83 (115)“ / 211 (292)cm wingspan length, 24” / 61cm wide measured along center triangular tip. Measurements taken after blocking.
Yarn
Fingering weight held double. Lace weight mohair yarns are also recommended to add some texture.
Yardage
700-800g & 7-10 colors minimum. These are minimum suggestions for you to work with, but I always encourage you to have more colors and amounts ready to knit. More options = more color/contrast variety! The smaller size omits the two bottom short row wedges so it will require less yarn.
This shawl is designed to use several colors from your yarn stash. Gather a big pile of yarns to work with for your palette. Gather more yarn from your stash than you think you may need because you can always edit your yarn selection later. It’s best to have a broad range of colors and yardage amounts so you have more options to choose from while you knit each section.
Needles
40” / 100cm US 8 / 5mm circular or size needed to obtain gauge.
1 spare circular needle the same size or smaller than you main needle.
Gauge
I recommend swatching in garter stitch and seed stitch to familiarize yourself with holding 2 strands together. Gauge isn’t crucial, but try to get somewhere close to the recommended gauge. Just make sure you like the drape of your fabric. I tend to like my marled fabric defined and crispy (not too loose or sloppy looking). If you are using lace weight mohair yarns with your palette, you still only need to hold 2 strands of yarn together (1 strand of lace weight mohair together with 1 strand of fingering weight wool).
Garter Stitch Swatch
20 sts & 40 rows = 4” / 10cm in garter stitch (un-blocked)
Using 2 stands held together, cast on 25 stitches.
Knit every row while experimenting with different stripes and color combos.
Seed Stitch Swatch
19 sts & 34 rows 4” / 10cm in seed stitch (un-blocked)
Using 2 stands held together, cast on 25 stitches.
Seed Stitch Row: (K1, p1) to last stitch, k1.
Repeat Seed Stitch Row while experimenting with different stripes and color combos.
Refer to the introductory PDF for different marled color techniques.
If you have a tighter gauge (more stitches per inch), your shawl will be a bit smaller.
If you have a looser gauge (few stitches per inch), your shawl will be a bit bigger.
