In the early 1800’s twenty nine Martello towers were built along the East Anglian coastline to protect the country from French invasion. Many still survive today although they are no longer used for military purposes.

The Martello cowl is knit in the round from the top down. It can be knit to any length by continuing to repeat the main section.

This pattern has both written and charted instructions.

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn:
MC (light): 145yds / 135m
CC (dark): 130yds / 120m
4.5mm / US 7 16” / 40cm and 24” / 60cm circular needles
3 stitch markers

Finished Measurements:

22” / 56cm upper circumference
40” / 102cm lower circumference
10.5” / 27cm length at front
8” / 20cm length at back

The sample here was knit in Knit Picks Simply Wool Worsted in shades Wallace and Winnie.
