I see this sweater as a re-imagining of 1960s jackets, updated for modern crocheters. It features a wide stand-up collar, round-yoke shaping highlighted by a herringbone half-double crochet stitch, ¾ length sleeves, and large buttons. Yarns with a subtle color variation will highlight the herringbone stitch pattern and seamless construction. This pattern was originally published in Inside Crochet magazine.

12/3/09: There were two mistakes in the instructions for the collar as printed in Inside Crochet Magazine. The correct collar instructions are:

1. Using smaller hook, make 78(82, 86, 92, 96) ch.

Row 1 (RS): 1HBhtr in 3rd ch from hook, 1HBhtr into each ch to end, turn. 76(80, 84, 90, 94) sts.

Row 2: 2 ch (counts as 1htr), 1HBhtr into 2nd st and each st to end, turn.

Row 3: rep Row 2

Row 4 (Buttonhole Row): 2 ch (counts as 1htr), 1HBhtr into 2nd st, 1HBhtr into next st, ch 3, skip 3 sts, 1HBhtr into next st and each st to end, turn.

Rows 5-11: rep Row 2

Row 12 (Buttonhole Row): rep Row 4

Rows 13-15: rep Row 2

Row 16: Change to larger hook and create double-layer collar as follows: fold work so that the edge of the starting chain lines up with edge of the row just finished, with the right side out. Slip stitch to first chain to join and work 1 row HBhtr as for Row 2, inserting hook through each st and the corresponding chain st at the same time.

There was also a small typo in the magazine at the beginning of the sleeve, where there is a 9 instead of the ( in the second sentance so it reads “ … 1HBhtr in each of next 2 93, 3, 3, 4) sts” instead of “ … next 2 (3, 3, 3, 4) sts”.
