Matariki is the Maori name of the star cluster also known as ‘Seven Sisters’ or ‘Pleiades’. Its first appearance in New Zealands winter sky in late May, early June marks the start of a new phase of life.
Traditionally Matariki season was the time to plant trees, prepare the land for planting crops and renew associations with whānau and friends. The New Year is a good time to reflect on your place in the world, to reawaken old skills or try out new ones.

The Matariki baby blanket is worked in two sections. First you provisionally cast on your stitches for the in brioche rows in the center.
The big star in the middle is recommended for blanket sizes above
74 × 74 cm / 29 × 29”.
Then, stitches from the sides and from the provisional cast on are picked up. The border is worked in rounds with raglan lines, garter stitch and some more sweet little seed stitch stars.

The pattern gives you detailed instructions for two sizes (64 × 54 and 94 × 84 cm / 25 × 21” and 37 × 33”) but there is a table in the end that enables you to easily modify the size.

Finished size: 64 cm x 54 cm / 94 cm x 84 cm (You will find instructions for more sizes in the table at the end of the pattern.)

Materials:

• about 449 m / 491 yards (1026 m / 1122 yards) of DROPS Big Merino or Malabrigo Rios - circular needles, gauge 4.5 mm (US 7) und 5.5 mm (US 9) I recommend a screw system and connectors since cables longer than 150 cm / 60” might be useful (depending on blanket size).
• four stitch markers
• some waste yarn for casting on

Gauge:
16 stitches × 24 rows = 10 × 10 cm / 4 × 4” (on smaller needles, wet blocked)

Matariki ist eine kuschelige Babydecke aus Worsted- oder Aran-Garnen. Je nach Größe eignet sie sich bestens als Krabbeldecke oder als warmer Beschützer für Ausflüge mit dem Kinderwagen, Buggy oder Autokindersitz.
Die Decke wird in zwei Abschnitten gestrickt. Zuerst werden die Maschen für das innere Rechteck pro- visorisch angeschlagen und dann Vollpatent in Reihen gestrickt. Der große Perlmuster-Stern in der Mitte empfiehlt sich ab circa 74 × 74 cm Gesamtgröße.
Dann werden aus den Seiten und vom provisorischen Anschlag Maschen aufgenommen und ein breiter Rand mit kraus rechtem Rahmen und vielen kleinen Sternchen in Runden gestrickt.
Die Anleitung enthält die genauen Angaben für die Größen 54 × 64 cm und 84 × 94 cm. Die Tabelle am Ende erklärt die Modifikationen für alle anderen Größen.
