Mátyás” is a cozy sweater knit top-down in the round, in one piece and with no seaming.
During a trip to Budapest I visited the Hunyadi Mátyás church (Mattia Corvino in Italian). I was enraptured by the colorful paintings on the walls and columns of the Church interior. The colorwork yoke of this sweater was inspired by those paintings.
Start by casting-on the stitches for the neckline and work a twisted rib border.
The yoke is worked in three phases.
During the first phase, the first series of short rows is worked to raise the back neck.
During the second phase, the other colours are added and the yoke is knit using the stranded colourwork technique; increases are inserted to shape the garment.
During the third phase, short rows are used to shape the shoulders and the back of the garment.
When the yoke is completed, the stitches for the sleeves are divided from the body and the three pieces are completed separately.
The sleeves are long; all of the borders on the body and sleeves are also knit in twisted rib stitch.
