Open baseball, unwind yarn, knit the hat. Yes, you read that right!

We’ve been talking a lot about baseball these days. My son, Max, is umping this summer for pony and little league games. Lisa’s son plays baseball, Sue’s son coaches baseball…so much baseball conversation in the shop this summer.

When we heard a rumor from one of our customers that there was yarn in baseballs, we just had to find out for ourselves.

We learned SO MUCH about baseball these last few weeks. Like…did you know…that every MLB baseball is rubbed with mud before it’s used in a game? Every one.

Did you know that the mud comes from THE SAME PLACE in New Jersey? Lena Blackburne Rubbing Mud is a real thing. Every major and minor league team has been using the mud from this family for 75 years. Don’t even think about trying to find the mud hole. It’s location is top secret!

Did you know that 8 to 10 DOZEN balls are used in a single game? Anytime a pitcher throws a pitch in the dirt, the ball is removed from play. Anytime the ball is hit, it’s removed from play. That’s a lotta balls!

Did you know the red stitching on a baseball is done by hand? Not machine?

Did you know there is YARN inside MLB baseballs?
Sure enough! Yarn!! Wool!!
