Needles: 3.5 mm/US4 for your preferred method of working body and sleeve circumferences in the round or needle size to obtain gauge

Blocked gauge: 23 sts and 35 rows = 10 cm 4” in Stockinette (single thread; one strand of yarn); 19 sts and 27 rows = 10 cm 4” in Maya Pattern (held double; two strands of yarn)

Notions: stitch markers, tapestry needle, stitch holder/waste yarn, clear elastic thread (optional), crochet hook 3.5 mm/US4 (optional, for finishing the lateral braid)

Construction notes: The Maya Tee is a round yoke shirt knit seamlessly from the top down. First the neck is cast on and formed using Short Rows. After completing the yoke, the short sleeves are separated from the body and finished with a classic double-folded hem. Neckline and sleeve hems are accentuated by slim Estonian braids and the A-line shaped garment flows into a dreamy color fade towards the body hem. Body and sleeve length are both easily adjustable.

Inspiration: This pattern is inspired by Maya Angelou.
Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) was an incredible American poet and civil rights activist. She wrote a famous book called “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” where she talked about her life and received wide acclaim for its exploration of race, identity, and resilience. Maya’s powerful words and fight for equality still inspire people today, making her an unforgettable figure in American history. She is someone who inspired me with her wise words and strong spirit.
Maya once said, “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.“ She was referring to the fact that each of us have the ability to make life better for each other. We are equipped to spread kindness, even when things seem tough. This knit shirt, changing from cream to pink in a gentle fade, is a kind reminder of Maya’s suggestion. It’s like how a rainbow appears when the sun shines through rain clouds, bringing color to the sky. Your shirt shows how things can change beautifully, just like Angelou’s message encourages us to find brightness even in difficult times. It’s a lovely way to remember to stay positive and strong, just like a rainbow bringing hope on a cloudy day.
