Melt the ICE (Crochet Version)
Pattern now updated with corrected stitch count!
Video tutorial of how to modify hat coming soon.
In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to
wear, make, or distribute.
As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design.
This is the crochet version. The knit version is here.
As with our knitted version, ALL proceeds from the sale of this pattern will be given to immigrant aid organizations within the Twin Cities community.
Thank you !!!!
NOTE: Mushroom shape when off the head is because of the type of ribbing, hat stretches out to go around head and looks normal on the sides when on.
Stitches Used:
- Chain
- Slip stitch in back loop
- Single Crochet
- Center Single Crochet/Waistcoat Stitch
- Invisible Slip Stitch Join
Pattern Notes/Tutorials:
-
If making with a non-stretchy yarn you may need to switch to a single crochet back loop ribbing instead of the slip stitch back loop ribbing. You may still need to adjust the number of rows depending on yarn and head circumference but hopefully less than with the slip stitch ribbing
-
video on the slip stitch ribbing instructions - updated with a video showing the same ribbing as instructions
