During Jane Austen’s time, less fortunate men and women knitted socks and gloves for income. These items could be found in village shops, where I imagine Catherine Morland purchasing a pair for Henry Tilney before traveling by carriage to Northanger Abbey. These finely knitted gloves allow for handling the reins, while the chevron outer mitt provides extra cushioning and warmth. (Interweave)
