Mere Bagatelle
Starting at brick number one, and always moving forwards, how many different paths can you take to reach the brick at the bottom?
The answer is on the brick : 924
Mere Bagatelle is worked in simple filet crochet, using oddments of yarn. The same weight of yarn should be used throughout, and it is best to use smooth yarns so that the numbers show clearly. Each of the 49 bricks can be made from a different colour, to use up your oddments, or you can choose a single colour, or mixture of colours.
The mathematics of this design is related to the old-fashioned bagatelle games. Hence, the title.
