Merge
Hi Folks!
Thanks for checking out the Merge shawl! This adjustable shawl / scarf hybrid is a relaxing knit composed of garter, slipped, and crossed stitches to create playful textured lines, and it is a great opportunity to show off some complementary variegated yarns, or even that gradient you’ve probably been saving for something special. As you knit, lines will emerge and make their way to the bottom of the shawl, where they will turn and merge with existing lines, like cars entering a highway. This creates a dynamic, expanding stripe along one edge of the shawl.
Note: This is a highly adjustable pattern with no strict yardage requirements. Feel free to use more or less yarn and bind off whenever you are satisfied with the length of your shawl!
Here’s a quick summary of the pattern based on the original sample:
Dimensions:
--76 in (193 cm) in length
--16 in (41 cm) wide at thickest point
Yarn Requirements:
--Around 700 yards of fingering weight yarn used in the sample shown
--Designed for 2 colors (solid, tonal, variegated, you pick!), but feel free to mix it up
Needles:
--3.25 mm (US 3) circular needles
Gauge:
--24 sts by 48 rows = 4 in by 4 in (10 cm by 10 cm) in garter stitch after blocking lightly
Other Materials:
--stitch markers
--tapestry needle to weave in ends
Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Reach out! I’ll do my best to respond back as quickly as I can. If I don’t get back to you right away, please forgive me! I probably have my nose buried in a book for grad school.
Special shout out to Merge’s test knitter, Megan! Thank you so much for taking the time to knit this shawl! Take a look at her interpretation of Merge on her project page :)
