When I first saw this stitch pattern knit up, it immediately reminded me of scuba diving through kelp forests - Flying through tall towers of leaves, with dancing dots of sun shining through in waving columns. This lace (traveling vine) almost perfectly replicates that effect for me! Others insist the stockinette patches look like fish (or mermaid!) tails swimming with the current. With all these maritime themes going on, I knew immediately what yarn the stitch was crying out for, and set right in to make these socks. The lace is well suited to subtle, tonal variegated yarns as it is lightly biased and will tend to gently curve any stripes that appear, and the dancing lines of holes are obvious even in more highly colored yarns. The lace is relatively easy, and would be accessible to an intermediate knitter trying lace for the first time. While I love it in hues of green and blue, the pattern will of course look lovely in any shade of the rainbow.
