Merritt Shawl
The second design in the family tree project, Merritt is a shawl born from the bright heartbeat of New York in the sixties, where my father - Sheldon Merritt Machlin, photographer, sculptor, and early pioneer of the 1960s kinetic art movement - captured light through his lens and sculpted motion from stillness. Inspired by the bright colors and clean, confident lines of pop art, this shawl plays with bold stripes and simple geometry to evoke the energetic visual language he loved. His world was one of color blocks and shifting forms, of art that hummed with life even when it stood still. Worked entirely in garter stitch, Merritt offers the soothing pleasure of a relaxing knit, while its clever construction provides just enough intrigue to keep more experienced knitters happily engaged. Warm, drapey, and unexpectedly versatile, this shawl wraps you not only in color, but in the creative spirit of an artist who saw movement and possibility everywhere. So many color combos to choose from! Find your inner pop artist with Merritt.
