This hat is made with a combination of knitting and Tunisian Crochet, but you don’t need to know how to crochet to make it! The pattern is written for knitters who want to try something new. There are a lot of instructions. Tunisian Crochet, also known as Tunisian Knitting, is easy to learn and a bit like both knitting and crochet. There are also a bonus scarf and blanket instructions
- The hat is worked flat with Tunisian Crochet, seamed up, then a knit 1x1 rib is added at the end.
- The scarf has a contrasting solid color added that creates a woven look
- The blanket is designed based on the yarn, so the color changes happen on every row
There’s a lot of information built into the pattern to get you going:
- Tunisian Knitting overview and photo tutorial
- Information on where to order Tunisian Crochet hooks
- Links to our Photobucket site which has more detailed project pictures.
- A step-by-step photo tutorial specifically for the making the hat.

The Metamorphosis Hat is my emergency gift project. Once you get the hang of it, the hat can be finished in about 2 hours. I have had more people ask me to knit them this hat than any other project I’ve knit. It’s a good thing it’s so fast to make (and easy to teach). Even if you don’t crochet and don’t think you want to learn to crochet, you’ll like this cross between the two. These examples were knit with Crystal Palace Chunky Mochi, but other slow changing yarns would work also.
Yarn Shops: We have a free class plan written for this pattern. You can find more information in the Retailer section of our serb site.
