Midnight Lightning
The name of this shawl comes from the first section worked. The design was inspired by zigzag lines, like forked lightning. It is designed for two complementary skeins of yarn, the first lightly variegated or semi-solid and the second solid or semi-solid so as not to “fight” with the stitch patterns. If you prefer to work in one colourway, add the total quantities of yarn together to find the total yardage required.
The sample shawl used Wollmeise Pure and used less than one skein of each colourway. I have allowed a little extra yarn in the pattern, and if you are a loose knitter you may wish to either have a second skein of Yarn B available or a heavy skein or be prepared to use some of Yarn A to rescue you at the end! It is possible to make the shawl using less than 150g of each colourway though
Midnight Lightning is worked from the top down beginning with a garter tab cast-on and worked out towards the bottom edge.
After blocking, the finished shawl measures 24” (61cm) deep at the centre with a 65” (165cm) wingspan when worked to pattern tension. Tension is 24 sts and 29 rows to 4”(10cm) of stocking stitch after blocking.
You will need:
550 yards (504m) yarn A (multi-coloured in sample photograph)
600 yards (548 m) yarn B (blue in sample photograph)
3.5mm (US4) knitting needles
6 stitch markers
Darning needle (for weaving in ends)
You need to be able to: work lace from either charted or written instructions (written instructions are included - it is not necessary to work from charts) using common increases and decreases (YO, SSK, K2tog)
