When my daughter was smaller and just learning to talk, her favorite flowers were dandelions; especially dandelions that had gone to seed. She’d clumsily grab at the hollow stems, lift the flowers to her lips, and try to blow the seeds. All through the first summer of her newfound mobility, she’d stop by every patch of grass, looking for dandelion clocks to collect.

Midsummer meadow is an homage to my daughter’s favorite flower. Though some may consider them little more than common weeds, they’re an essential part of her summer routine, just as I hope this dress will be.

This versatile knit for girls can be knit to dress or tunic length, and the pattern includes instructions for sleeveless and cap sleeve versions. Knit from the bottom up starting with a folded hem, Midsummer Meadow features dandelion flowers sprouting from the hem, a sweet picot welt, and an all-over dandelion flower pattern across the yoke. Subtle gathers across the front and a box pleat at the center back pull in the skirt, and a buttoned keyhole opening at the back neck makes the dress easy to pull on and off.
The dress is worked in the round up to the underarms, and then the front and back of the yoke are knit flat. A three needle bind-off joins the shoulders.

This pattern includes photos to illustrate special techniques, including the box pleat, picot welt, and the fixed loop and extended loop stitches used for the flower motifs.

Midsummer Meadow is appropriate for intermediate knitters.

Designer Notes:

It can take a little practice to get the tension on the loop stitches just right. Making a practice swatch before you begin will help.
