California has some of the most beautiful weather in the world, but as we approach the end of the year, I always miss the NYC winters I grew up loving. I miss the feeling of being bundled up in cozy layers and hand-knits; I long for the comfort and security of a shawl wrapped tight and shoved into a big coat. As soon as I saw this beautiful yarn in my local yarn shop, I knew it needed to be a big, moody, textured shawl. A shawl that not only keeps you warm, but one that immediately takes you back to your favorite cozy memories. A symmetric shawl that can be worn as many ways as you can come up with, that’s equally engaging and simple to knit. No matter what you call it, you’ll instantly be transported to your favorite cozy spot when you wrap up in this big, textured, hug of a shawl.
Naming patterns can be a tricky thing. Sometimes a clear title stands out during the design process, and sometimes I have a beautiful object that just screams “Triangle” and I have to work a little harder. This shawl had a name - a great name - one that was perfect and clearly expressed the intent of this design from the moment I saw the yarn to the second I tried on the shawl. Then, the day before my official announcement, another pattern came out with the same exact name. A pattern needs a name, but the original one was so entwined with the design that no other name felt suitable, and I almost set it aside. Then I realized the solution is no name. If it can’t be correctly named it will be named for incorrect naming! No matter what you call it, this pattern is fun and engaging to make and sure to become a wardrobe staple!
This side-to-side triangle shawl pattern is worked flat, using simple increases and decreases to achieve its final shape. The edges are smooth and neat with slip stitch details, and the 8-row repeats are easily memorized.
The pattern will work with a wide variety of yarn weights and fibers and exact gauge is not strictly required. I recommend working with a soft yarn with good drape and needles a size up from recommended. The size can be very simply modified (instructions included).
This pattern includes written instructions, and has been fully test knitted and professionally tech edited!
