Summary Mittens based on the shaping principle of miters.

GAUGE:

• 4.5 sts to 1” / 2.5 cm if using 3-ply (see below)
• 5 sts to 1” / 2.5 cm if using 2-ply

MATERIALS:

• 1 4oz skein 3-ply Sheepswool, or any wool to give correct GAUGE.
• 1 4oz skein 2-ply Sheepswool, Homespun, Fisherman, or 2-ply Icelandic Wool.
• 1 set of 5 needles to give you correct GAUGE.

• Once you have mastered 4 needles, try working on 5. It is usually more practical to divide a circular bit of knitting into quarters than into thirds.
• Let's make them in May; let's take our time over them; let's venture into new approaches and designs; let's enjoy them.  For the compulsive knitter, hot weather need not put a crimp in his or her activity.  Large projects may lie heavy and warm on the lap, but small things like mittens and socks are easy to carry about outdoors, and can be made surprisingly fast.
• If I constructed the whole mitten on the miter principle, and used four miters, two pointing up and two pointing down so that they neutralized each other, the down-pointing one could be placed at the back and front of the mitten and would look rather graceful.
