The Mittelweg (“Middle Way”) is a north-south long-distance path which takes its visitors through one of the most spectacular natural scenes in Germany, the Black Forest. The hiking trail goes through thick dark-green woodlands of the forest, past age-old farmlands and iridescent lakes. Along the path, one often comes across intriguing man-made sights, including rustic chapels, medieval castle ruins and gorgeous half-timbered villages.

Since I visited the Black Forest some years ago it has become one of my favourite hiking destinations and the sensations and feelings experienced there, a recurring source of inspiration for many of my designs, like this one-skein shawl.

This heart-shaped shawl is worked top-down back and forth on a circular needle to make room for all the stitches and combines a deep garter stitch section with a lovely lace edging.
The shawl is shaped by regular increases along both wings and the central spine.
The lace is reversible. Please note that the lace pattern is charted only.

Size One size.
Finished measurements after blocking: 150cm / 59’’ long and 61cm / 24’’ deep at the deepest point.

Circular needle 4 mm / US 6 with cable 100 cm

Notions
Crochet hook or tapestry needle to weave in the ends. Stitch markers. Blocking aids and row counter (optional, but highly recommended)

Gauge
18 sts and 32 rows - 10x10 cm / 4x4’’ in garter stitch with 4 mm / US 6 needles, washed and blocked. Even if I personally think the gauge for shawls is not so important.
