Companion pattern to the Regency Chemisette

Chemisettes covered a woman’s neck and collarbone area above a low-cut dress either for modesty or warmth (or both). They could range from plain and simple, such as the one Jane Austen wears in her sister Cassandra’s pencil and watercolor sketch, to elaborate frilly affairs with pintucks and button closures.

This chemisette comes in two shapes, so you can choose between a historical feel or a modern take. The Regency version, in white, has patterning on the front panels and can be tucked into the neckline of a dress or top. The modern version, worn with a point in front, has an allover pattern and can be worn like a cowl. Both are knitted from the top down, starting with a lacy ruffle featuring a picot cast-on and eyelets. A second row of eyelets allows for a ribbon to be threaded through to adjust the fit at the neck. The buttonholes are formed at the end by picking up stitches along the edge and then working a row of yarnovers followed by a picot bind-off.

Needles Size 4 (3.5 mm): 32” circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
