Moominblankie
Adapted from Ann Myhre’s wonderful Baby Blanket Latvian Garden and published with her permission. Thanks Ann :)
Moomin Valley, Wave and Finnish Floral motifs charted by Sue Grandfield.
Design & colours inspired by the writings of Tove Jansson. See here for more details
I hope there are no errors in the pattern, but it is possible as I have only knit the blanket once. As the pattern is a freebie, I’ve loaded it as is, rather than keep people waiting :)
Please let me know if you find any problems.
Wave Pattern - error or design choice? (added 14th October):
The pattern as written results in a half wave pattern at the end of the row over the number of sts I used in the wave chart:
213sts - 200 pattern plus 6 edge plus 7 steek
While I generally prefer to work in whole pattern repeats, this was deliberate. Here’s why -
My first attempt at the wave pattern did work whole repeats of the wave pattern which is easy to do - just continue on with the same number of stitches as used for the heart pattern:
209 sts -196 pattern sts plus 6 edge sts, plus 7 steek sts.
You would then increase 4 sts in the first plain stocking stitch row before the Moomin Chart and decrease back to 209 sts before working the waves again:
209 sts -196 pattern sts plus 6 edge sts, plus 7 steek sts.
Why didn’t I do this? For some reason, the increases and decreases were much more obvious this way. But when I worked the increases in the row before the wave pattern, the increases were almost invisible. I think the shape of the wave pattern hides them better.
So, I decided I preferred half a wave pattern to having visible increases and decreases around the feature pattern.
But if you do want whole repeats of the wave pattern, work the increases/decreases in the plain rows before and after each Moomin pattern rather than working the increases before the waves and the decreases before the floral pattern as I did.
Actual errata:Prior to 14th October 2014 - there was mistake in the original pattern in the decreases at the end of Chart 8 -
Chart 9 Hearts Upside down should be worked over 196 pattern sts, 6 edge sts and 7 steek sts. Not 197 as I stated. I’ve loaded an amended PDF.
Sorry about that :)
