Moon Runes
~This pattern is part of a year-long club, and can only be purchased as part of that club until September 2019, when it will be available for individual sale. Thanks for understanding.~
“Moon-letters are rune-letters, but you cannot see them,” said Elrond, “not when you look straight at them. They can only be seen when the moon shines behind them, and what is more, with the most cunning sort it must be a moon of the same shape and season as the day when they were written.
“The dwarves invented them and wrote them with silver pens, as your friends could tell you. These must have been written on a midsummer’s eve in a crescent moon, a long while ago.”
—J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
I love colorwork letters. For these mitts, you can decide how secretive to be— runes only, letters only, or both. I matched the runes to their translations, but each is a separate chart, so you can be selective in creating your own. Feel free to use the chart(s) for patterns of your own, as well. These could easily become the legs of socks, or with a little rearrangement, words around a hat. The chart at the fingers is meant to be the light of a moon, although sadly, not a crescent moon on a midsummer’s eve.
Skill-level: Intermediate due to stranded colorwork chart reading and gusset-construction.
Materials: 230 yds / 210 m of a main color (Color A) and 110 yds / 100 m of a contrast color (Color B). The mitts pictured used Merino SW blend from La Fee Fil in Magdalena (dark blue) and Pegasus (light).
Needles: US2 (2.75mm) needles for working in the round.
Tools: stitch holder, tapestry needle, measuring tape, scissors.
Gauge: 34 stitches and 32 rounds in 4 inches or 10 cm, worked in the stranded knitting pattern.
Sizing: Small (Medium, Large, Extra-large) sizes measure approximately 7.5(8,8.5,9) inches or 19(20.3,21.6,22.8) cm. in circumference. Length is adjustable.
Mitts are designed to be a bit loose and smooshy, select a size that fits as close to the natural measurement of the forearm as possible.
